Flaky Apple Pie Bars

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

2. To make the crust, combine the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add the cold butter cubes and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

3. Gradually add the ice water, a tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix. Form the dough into a ball, then divide it in half.

4. Take one half of the dough and press it evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish to form the crust. Set aside the remaining dough for the topping.

5. For the apple filling, in a separate bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice. Toss everything together until the apples are coated evenly.

6. Spread the apple filling over the crust in the baking dish, making sure it’s distributed evenly.

7. To make the streusel topping, combine the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl. Add the cold butter cubes and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until crumbly.

8. Sprinkle the streusel topping over the apple filling, covering it completely.

9. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the crust and streusel topping turn golden brown, and the apples are tender.

10. Remove from the oven and let it cool completely in the baking dish before cutting into bars.

11. Once cooled, cut into squares or rectangles and serve. You can optionally dust the bars with powdered sugar or serve them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
