Cleaning the oven is often a tedious and time-consuming task. Burnt fat, food residue and incrustations can stubbornly stick to the walls and the grille. But there is a simple and effective trick to get your oven sparkling clean again without spending hours of scrubbing: the self-cleaning function.

How does the self-cleaning function work?

Modern ovens are often equipped with a self-cleaning function that relies on high temperatures. Here’s how it works:

  1. Preparation: Remove all loose food particles and drip trays from the oven. Make sure the oven is empty.
  2. Activation: Set the oven to the self-clean setting. This feature heats the oven to extremely high temperatures, typically between 400 and 500 degrees Celsius.
  3. Charring: During the self-cleaning cycle, the residue in the oven begins to char. Fat and leftover food turn to ash.
  4. Cooling: After the cycle is complete, the oven must cool down. This may take a few hours.
  5. Ash removal: After the oven has cooled, you can easily remove the remaining ash with a damp cloth or sponge.
